In theory, an interior design starts with a design style, a mood board, followed by a few prominent colors. These colors are usually a small amount of 3-5 colors that's used to determine the look and feel of a home. But how about an execution that’s based on different shades of the same color? This type of project is known as tone-on-tone interior design. When done correctly, it can really elevate the space and also creates the illusion of more space. When the furniture matches the walls, it tends to disappear into the wall making the room feel more spacious and less visually cluttered. Indeed choosing the right color scheme can easily determine the entire home décor concept.
1. Start with Color Selection
Start with the selection of the foundation color that fits into the interior design style that you have decided to go for. With the selection of the right tone variations, you can enjoy lots of richness and classiness at the same time with such tones. Neutrals and classics like dark blue are always a safe bet. They’re especially good if you’re seeking a style with timeless appeal like the minimalist interior design or Scandinavian interior design.
Once you’ve picked a color scheme that corresponds to your character and vision, start implementing the tone-on-tone concept. The tone variations themselves can be as many as you feel comfortable with. Just make sure that they all belong to the same family and look harmonious adjacent to each other.
2. Determine layers
Always start with the end goal in mind. To create layers, start with the use of different shades and warmths of the same tone can add depth to the space, even if you keep things monochromatic. It’s also a good idea to work with texture and make them stand out. Pastels, metallic, rough and smooth elements will stand out even more when color isn’t as prominent as it tends to be in a typical interior design project.
The result of a tone-on-tone decors can be visually intriguing for a longer period of time, revealing their secrets slowly and elegantly.
3. Design Elements
Apart from working with colour, you’ll also need to focus on other design elements. Thinking about furniture styles, materials and art will be important on top of the colour layering you’ll be doing. Materials can be mixed and so can furniture styles for a more eclectic look. Just make sure that everything works together in the end. Otherwise, the result is going to be a messy hodgepodge that just seems to be thrown into the room without thought or consideration.
4. Play with Patterns
Aside from furnishing and room paint, do explore using a range of patterns! Be bold and experiment with different geometric throw cushions and other furnishings. It sounds like a lot at first but in reality, the mix of patterns adds interest to the sofa, and subsequently the room.
5. Exercise Restraint
When sticking to a tone-on-tone theme for the design, it is key to exercise restraint, which sounds much easier in writing than it is in actuality! While you think this rule may contradict everything we've mentioned so far, it is in-fact otherwise. Exploring shades and patterns, but do stick to your original color palette and then play with texture and materials to achieve the desired ambience. Be careful when choosing too many colors and shades as it may spoil the overall aesthetic of your home.
