5 Important Pointers new homeowners should know

Not many things are more exciting than leaping from being a renter to being a first-time homeowner. Although it is a wonderful feeling, but some first-time homeowners lose their heads and make mistakes that can jeopardize everything they've worked so hard to earn. Following a series of practical steps early in the homeowning experience can save new owners time, money, and effort later down the road.

1. Plan several months ahead

Purchasing a home is easily the largest purchase in anyone's life. Instead of rushing to purchase a flat when the time comes, do take the time to document or write down what your dream home would be should there be any inspirations from time-to-time. In addition, do research to ensure that the materials and quality are something you would want to work with in the long-term. This includes durability and maintenance, as cleaning your home should be part and parcel of your considerations.

2. Prioritise your spending

This comes during the planning process. While you do not want to have any regrets in creating your dream home, there is a budget involved in all projects. Always start with the furniture and fixings that serve the most practical value to your home, then followed by aesthetics.

3. Do a thorough home inspection

This should be done before and after your renovation works to ensure your assigned contractor or interior designer did not damage your home during the renovation process. The last thing you want is to discover a flaw after moving into your freshly renovated home.

4. Set aside an emergency fund for unexpected costs

When planning your cash portion for your new home, its important to set aside an emergency sum of money to be tapped on during the renovation process and unexpected costs. You may be surprised but most of the time, budget will exceed due to several reasons during the renovation process. 5. Get properly insured

It may sound like a no-brainer, but we highly recommend getting your home insured against such unexpected home emergencies. Water leakage, burst pipes, faulty electrical wiring – these can all be covered! Do get a policy that protects your home and the things you love from fires, water damage and even burglary, all of which can cost you a fortune otherwise.
