Common Mistakes when working with Small Spaces & How to Avoid Them

Updated: Aug 10, 2021

Decades have passed and the HDB flats in Singapore are getting smaller and smaller. Many new homeowners struggle to find balance of space VS design. For that, do check out our recent article on maximizing space in small homes. New homeowners are often excited to add more furniture or decorations to their new home, but this is where mistakes are made. They get easily carried away by the design of the decorations and purchase them right away. Your flat is going to end up all cramped up if you did the same thing. Here are some of the most common decorating mistakes.

1. Failing to Make Use of the Vertical Space

Avoid using too much base cabinets and shelves that take up too much floor space. Rooms with high ceilings look muddled up with all those floor obstructions. If there is enough vertical space, then utilise them. By simply add ingsome wall cabinets that are almost near the ceiling to create a streamlined look. Another great idea is to put in some built-in shelves above the base cabinets to accentuate the available vertical space.

2. Not being disciplined.

Whenever purchasing new items for your flat, do be disciplined and think twice if it will actually fit into the house, or if you actually need it. You'll be surprised how fast loose furniture can cramp up the house. The next time you are out on a hunt for furniture, ask yourself twice if there is indeed space at home for it. In short, keep the decorations and spare furniture's to a minimum, and your rooms may look a little more pleasing to the eyes.

3. Buying Thick, Heavy Curtains

Sure, thick curtains often have elegant and sophisticated patterns. Plus, it has a matching window valance that makes it more tempting to get. However, thick curtains can shrink a space. Instead, try sheer curtains to allow the natural light stream to in. It’s better to have more light as this also makes the room appear more spacious. If you don’t like the idea of using sheer curtains because they offer little to no privacy, then you could add window coverings such as soft sheer shadings. This can block off the view from the outside while bringing an ample amount of light inside.

4. Making use of smart furniture

Concealed storage solutions are one of the more popular ways to make the best out of the space you have. For example, concealed work stations are a great way to hide ugly cable wires and stash away some bits and bobs at the same time. Also, furniture with secret compartments that double up as storage space are excellent for keeping everything out of sight, helping to create the image that your home is impeccably neat and well-kept.
